Stress and anxiety
Students with disabilities have a higher rate of unplanned pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, and sexual abuse than the general population and are less likely to have received any sexuality education. All people need the information and skills to make choices about sexuality and relationship and to have relationships that are enriching and not exploitive. As part of our PBIS program,we implement 5 pt scale check-ins system building-wide.
We created a form using google sheets which allowed us to see the document in real-time and collect data We used our classroom smart boards to project the 5 pt scale and requested that students checked in at the start of each class period. We made it so that all students could see each other's rating as a way to teach empathy, social cues, and body language. As a Principal, being able to pull up a google sheets and see where all of my students are at in regards to their emotions in less than two minutes was not only helpful but also empowering. This session will review the basis components of the LRE Rubric for Preschool and why it was developed.
Participants will get an understanding of how it has evolved and been used in a variety of districts areas across the state. Location: Pavilion. Special Education State Complaints, Due Process Hearings and Agency Guidance continue to have common themes and potential lessons learned for public schools. This session will focus on the most commonly-raised issues in State Complaints, the nature of Due Process Hearing Requests around the State of Michigan and guidance that has been issued by the United States Department of Education and the Michigan Department of Education related to Special Education.
The presentation will also identify hot issues and trends related to special education compliance so that public schools can anticipate, prepare for and resolve issues at the IEP table, rather than through complaints, hearings and litigation. Research has demonstrated that applied behavior analysis ABA is an evidence-based practice for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders ASD and is applicable across a broad range of settings. In October , insurance legislation was enacted to provide insurance coverage for clinical ABA services, and since that time, a number of challenges have occurred in the process of cross-agency collaboration to improve seamless access to these services for students and families.
This session will outline school and ABA provider legal requirements and ethical responsibilities as the foundation for effective collaboration and then explore efforts for utilizing ABA in the school setting as well as collaborating with ABA providers. The MDE OSE will discuss the differences between a deviation and a waiver, share the steps for successfully applying for a deviation or a waiver, and will share trends and pitfalls that districts should be made aware of.

The session will first focus on how the "stress" of teaching and leading can lead to "compassion fatigue" and "burnout" if you do not engage in proactive self care activities. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the Inclusive Classroom Profile ICP as well as ways in which it can be used for program coaching and mentoring. The ICP, developed and validated by Dr.
Elena Soukakou, is a structured observation rating scale designed to assess the quality of 12 inclusive classroom practices that support the developmental needs of preschool-aged children with disabilities in typical early childhood settings. Through this partnership, incarcerated students have access to appropriate education, community agency services and transition upon reentry to their local district.

Teachers have no place diagnosing medical conditions and doctors have no place prescribing IEPs. This can put parents and professionals in a difficult place, especially when education regulations require the participation of medical professionals or require educators to verify eligibility for disability funding. It is in the student's best interest when everyone is involved and on the same page. However, physicians have little training on the special education process, their role in it, and what an IEP does and does not mean for their patient and the family. There is a lot we can do as educators when we work with medical professionals to either facilitate or complicate the process.
This session will provide participants with practical strategies related to explaining to families the differences between the medical and educational models of disability, collaborating with physicians when student have complex medical conditions, and helping physicians understand how to support families with the special education process. Music therapy is an evidence based therapy where music is the modality used to assist students with unique learning needs as addressed in Specially Designed Instruction SDI.
This presentation will discuss definitions of music therapy, a rationale for the use of music in education, models of music therapy service provision, goal areas addressed, and interactive interventions, as wells as video examples. Participants will understand the student centric plan and effectiveness of this modality. Music therapy is considered a related service under the Individuals with Disabilities Act IDEA and is offered through decision by the administrative teams and school districts. Music can often reach students who do not respond to traditional methods of teaching.
Educational domains are addressed including cognitive, physical, and communicative function in an engaging and motivating environment. Through singing, playing instruments, music discussion, songwriting, and relaxation to music, students can learn skills important for self regulation and academic gains. Special educators are involved in making many complicated legal decisions, sometimes on the fly. This seminar presents 4 to 6 hypotheticals followed by several multiple choice questions. Audience input will be reviewed. Topics will include: least restrictive environment LRE , private placements, student discipline, procedural safeguards and dispute resolution.
Since , the MDE has collaborated with stakeholders from across Michigan to build a students-first teacher preparation and certification system that prepares effective educators to use differentiated supports to meet the needs of the whole child. Central to this work has been the creation of a new certificate structure with narrower grade bands and deeper emphasis on preparation to teach literacy.

Early Intervention is a federally mandated program that provides supports and services to infants and toddlers with disabilities and their families throughout all 56 states and jurisdictions in the United States. Due to the rapid brain development occurring during the first three years of life, early intervention with infants and toddlers is more cost effective and produces greater outcomes than waiting until a child has reached school age Harvard Center for the Developing Child, Purposeful movement is often overlooked in the attempt to meet rigorous academic criteria.
Research shows that adding purposeful movement into the classroom and home is extremely beneficial for everyone - especially for young developing learners. For success in the classroom, we must REFocus our efforts to address missing skills that are the foundation for academic, behavioral, and social success. The REFocus program serves students ages 3 through the third grade, and older students already experiencing or are at-risk of learning failure.
The Fundamentals of Social Communication elective is specifically designed for students with average to above average intelligence yet neurologically challenged with their verbal and nonverbal social cognition. The research will clarify the neurological challenges that materialize for these bright young people during their secondary years. Learn how Fennville Public Schools created school based "employment" opportunities to address various student needs of middle school students and the impact it has had on one of our "tough" students. A step-by-step look at handling a complaint of student-to-student criminal sexual conduct, with a particular focus on the involvement of students with disabilities as complainants, respondents, and witnesses.
Topics will include, but are not limited to, implementing interim and remedial measures, applying appropriate special education discipline procedures, and placement issues. Staff will also highlight the top 10 complaint issues for the school year. It will only provide a very basic overview of ACEs and how trauma affects the brain. Instead this presentation is designed to provide information on the "next steps" after becoming trauma aware leading a district to Trauma Responsive and eventually Trauma Informed. This session will provide information on what SLIP is and how it can support low incidence supervisors. In this session the activities and strategies implemented across multiple rural communities will be discussed.
